What is the Microsoft AI platform?
“Microsoft AI platform” is not an official product name but the common term for Microsoft's stack to build, run and govern AI: Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Studio for business teams, Microsoft Foundry for developers, Fabric and the Microsoft IQ layers for data, and Entra, Purview and Agent 365 for control. Microsoft itself calls this stack the Microsoft Agent Platform.
It helps to think in four layers. People use AI inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, including the Researcher and Analyst agents and Copilot Cowork for long-running tasks. Agents are built in Copilot Studio (low-code) or Microsoft Foundry (pro-code: Foundry Agent Service, Microsoft Agent Framework 1.0 and a catalogue of over 10,000 models that now includes Azure OpenAI). Knowledge comes from Work IQ, Fabric IQ and Foundry IQ. Microsoft Entra Agent ID, Purview and Agent 365 keep every agent identifiable, compliant and secure.

Why Microsoft AI programmes fragment
Each department picks its own Microsoft AI tool. Nobody owns the platform.
Sales buys Copilot seats, operations pilots Copilot Studio, IT experiments in Foundry. Each pilot works on its own — then the costs of skipping architecture show up: a separate knowledge index per project, agents without owners, credit and token bills nobody forecast, and a security review that stops go-live because nobody decided on flex routing, model data zones or Agent 365 prerequisites. The fix is not another pilot but a platform decision made once and applied to every agent.

Is “Microsoft AI platform” an official Microsoft product?
No. “Microsoft AI platform” is a term buyers use, not a product you can license. At Build 2026 Microsoft described the Microsoft Agent Platform as everything needed to build, run, govern and scale agents, and it groups the knowledge layers under Microsoft IQ: Work IQ, Fabric IQ, Foundry IQ and Web IQ. In practice the platform is Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, Microsoft Foundry, Fabric, Entra, Purview and Agent 365 working together.
Copilot Studio vs Foundry — which one should we use?
Use Copilot Studio when business teams need an agent quickly, with low-code tools and SaaS security. Use Microsoft Foundry when developers need model choice, custom code, deep integration or private networking. Microsoft's Cloud Adoption Framework first asks whether a ready-made agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot already meets the need, and recommends 1–2 week prototypes. Hybrids are common, for example a Copilot Studio agent running on a Foundry model.
How much does Microsoft Agent 365 cost?
Microsoft Agent 365 costs $15 per user per month, or is included in Microsoft 365 E7 at $99 per user per month (list prices as of September 2026). Since 1 June 2026 it requires Microsoft 365 E5, or the Defender and Purview suites, or Business Premium for smaller companies. Since 1 July 2026, Defender security features for Copilot Studio and Foundry agents need an Agent 365 licence.
What does the Microsoft AI stack cost in total?
There is no single price: the total combines per-user licences and consumption. As of September 2026, list prices are €26 per user per month for Microsoft 365 Copilot (annual) or €18.20 for Copilot Business, €173.30 per month for 25,000 Copilot Studio credits, and pay-per-token model usage in Foundry, where Agent Service orchestration is free. We model all of these against your real use cases and user counts.
What happens to our data in Azure OpenAI?
Prompts and completions in Azure OpenAI are not available to OpenAI and are not used to improve the models. Azure OpenAI is now part of Microsoft Foundry, where a single Foundry resource replaces the former hub and Azure OpenAI resources. Data at rest stays in your geography, Data Zone EU deployments keep processing within the EU Data Boundary, and EEA deployments use EEA-based abuse reviewers. Your own GDPR assessment still applies; we prepare the technical facts for it.
Can we keep AI processing inside the EU?
Largely yes, if the settings are chosen deliberately. In Foundry, Data Zone EU deployments keep processing within the EU Data Boundary for models such as GPT-5.4 to GPT-5.6, Mistral Large 3 and DeepSeek-V4-Flash; Claude on Foundry has no EU data zone. In Microsoft 365, flex routing is on by default for EU tenants created after 25 March 2026 and an AI administrator can switch it off.
How do we govern agents built in different Microsoft tools?
Through one identity, data and control model. New Copilot Studio agents and Foundry agents published to Microsoft 365 Copilot or Teams each get a Microsoft Entra agent identity. Purview applies sensitivity labels, DLP, audit and retention. Agent 365 gives IT and security one registry across Copilot Studio, Foundry, Microsoft 365 Copilot and third-party agents, while Foundry Control Plane covers tracing and evaluations for developers.
Where do Microsoft Fabric, Work IQ and Foundry IQ fit?
They form the knowledge layer that grounds agents in your data. Work IQ grounds Microsoft 365 Copilot in your company data. Fabric and Fabric IQ bring analytics data from OneLake. Foundry IQ is a permission-aware knowledge layer on Azure AI Search that indexes SharePoint, OneLake, Blob storage and web sources, honours Purview labels and can also be used from Copilot Studio.
Do we need Microsoft 365 E7 to use AI agents?
No. Microsoft 365 E7 ($99 per user per month, list price as of September 2026) bundles E5, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Agent 365 and the Entra Suite. It suits companies where most users need all four. Where only some teams use agents, licensing Copilot and Agent 365 for those teams can cost less, as long as the E5 or Business Premium prerequisite is met. We compare both scenarios in the cost model.
Can you work alongside our Microsoft partner or reseller?
Yes. Your licences and Azure consumption stay with Microsoft or your current reseller, and we work with your IT team or partner. Our part is architecture, governance, agent delivery and AI-OPS. Our tool recommendations follow the use case, not licence volume — sometimes that means fewer seats or a simpler tool.
